Dear customers,

For those who currently live in Tokyo as expats, or planning to move to Japan, I would like to hereby give you some tips in regards to how you can dispose large-sized garbage, in Tokyo.

First of all, currently it is illegal to dispose any large-sized trash (Sodai-gomi in Japanese) which is larger than 30cm X 30cm X 30cm for free of charge in any location in Japan, with no exception.

You should contact your local city government office and request them to collect your large-sized waste by fee. Generally speaking, it is highly recommendable to give them a phone call at least a week in advance of date when you need to dispose your old furniture, or any kind of home appliance which is larger than the size mentioned above. It is simply because most of local city government in Japan is going through hard time collecting tax and not being able to function super-efficiently to live up to their customer's expectation.The procedure is usually very troublesome, even if you live in this country long enough to know it is better not to direct too much mental energy on anything has to do with our government.

I am not hereby going further to explain how it can be painful in your backside to deal with local or national government in Japan with my perhaps considerably inconsiderate generalization, anyhow.So here is the tips. If you need to throw out any-large sized trash in Tokyo, ask your friends first if any of them would like to treasure your waste instead of you, fridge, bed, cupboard, chairs or tables for example.

If you are, for example, planning to move to other apartment or return home, you should act as quickly as possible to scheme who's friend of who's would treasure your waste. Otherwise you can not get away with spending your own hard earned cash.　

If, unfortunately none of your friend's of friend are reluctant to treasure your waste, try your local recycle shop if any of them would like to buy your furniture or whatever already became burdens for you.

Recycle shop is, second hand goods shop or thrift shop you can find any urban household area in Japan.

Are you familiar with any "Recycle shop" shop nearby? Then you might as well go ahead and phone them or e-mail them first. Ask them if they are interested in buying your furniture. It is NOT recommendable to carry your stuff to the shopfront before your enquiry, as most of those shops are pretty picky on what they can buy. You might as well end up with not knowing to go elsewhere with your cupboard in the middle of nowhere.
